Friends of the Waterfront, a Louisville, KY non-profit organization, is excited to announce that the 26th Annual Silver Anchor Awards Reception will take place Thursday, September 14, 2017 on the Belle of Louisville. At this year’s event, Friends of the Waterfront will honor two award recipients for their continued and outstanding support of Waterfront Park: Matt Thornton, CEO of Louisville-based Thorntons Inc., and The National Weather Service.
The 26th Annual Silver Anchor Awards Reception dedicates itself to raising funds supporting the Waterfront Development Corporation and Waterfront Park.
All proceeds from the 26th Annual Silver Anchor Awards Ceremony will benefit Waterfront Park programs such as:
- WFPK Waterfront Wednesday Concert Series
- Waterfront Park Clean Team
- Waterfront Park Maintenance
- Lighting of the Big Four Bridge
- Waterfront Park’s Annual July 4th Celebration
- Catfish Louie Community Appearances … and much more
This year’s Silver Anchor Award recognizes Mr. Matt Thornton, CEO of Thorntons, Kentucky’s largest privately-owned corporation, that owns and operates over 180 gasoline and convenience stores across the Ohio River Valley, through Tennessee, and into Florida. Mr. Thornton also serves as Chairman of the Waterfront Development Corporation (WDC). The WDC Board oversees the mission of the corporation. The mission promises to plan, construct, and maintain Waterfront Park while coordinating events to bring together the city of Louisville. The WDC recently released plans for a fourth phase of expansion for Waterfront Park. Chairman Thornton has been a big booster of this extension of Waterfront Park. Chairman Thornton has also been a major supporter of the park, events and Waterfront Park Staff.
The National Weather Service will also be recognized for outstanding commitment to the safety of patrons at Waterfront Park Events. Over the years, the NWS team in Louisville has gone above and beyond to support the Waterfront Development Corporation (a component unit of Metro Government) with advice and insight which has ensured the safety of hundreds of thousands of patrons to Waterfront Park events. NWS has guided WDC through dozens of serious situations over the years. NWS support has helped WDC Staff to evacuate when necessary (and with great precision), and has provided confidence to proceed with events whenever possible.
The 2017 Silver Anchor Awards Reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. dockside on the Belle of Louisville with an awards presentation at 6:00 p.m. There will be hors d’oeuvres and cocktails available for guests as well as a silent auction and live music by Small Time Napoleon.
