This month to show appreciation of our Board of Directors, we’re focusing our spotlight on board member, Kelley Luckett. In addition to being on the Board for Friends of the Waterfront, Kelley works for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana. We appreciate everything Kelley does for Friends of the Waterfront and the community! Get to know a little bit more about her below.
My career has been a winding path for sure! I started in graphic design where I worked for the Courier-Journal for 5 years in their marketing department. During that time I helped launch Velocity and worked on some really cool projects. I left the CJ to go to grad school in St. Louis for Art Therapy, where I stayed for 7 years and worked as a trauma therapist. Upon returning I wanted to be on the proactive side with youth and found myself at the Boys and Girls Club. I am now the director of all the site-based clubs in the Louisville area.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve been involved with during your career so far?
By far the coolest thing that I have gotten to do was partnering with the Speed Museum for their Wall Together exhibit. They came to the Boys and Girls Club and worked with the youth on their artwork that was later installed at the Speed. It was so cool to go to the opening with all the kids and for them to see their art hanging on a museum wall… still gives me chills.
What other causes are you passionate about?
I am also very passionate about dog rescue. My husband and I have fostered over 50 dogs and have 4 adopted pups that we share our home with. I am the Adoption Coordinator for The Arrow Fund, and we also spend a lot of free time working toward humane treatment of animals.
What do you do around town for fun?
Chris and I found running several years ago and now have added cycling to the mix. We love exploring our city on foot or the bike, it gives you such a different perspective. We also enjoy all the amazing food that this city has to offer, and like to try new restaurant– although we always go back to some of our favorites!
What are your favorite events in Louisville and at the Waterfront?
We love being outside, being active, and we also love music. Waterfront Wednesdays are one of our very favorite events. Usually, we bike down and grab some food in NULU before heading to the park for the music. We also love Forecastle, no matter what the lineup is we always have a great time. And we can’t forget the Derby Festivities like the miniMarathon and Tour de Lou, which we love to participate in.
